The AVI video file format is a general-purpose multimedia format for housing video and audio data. Created by Microsoft in the early 1990s, the format has, over the years, garnered widespread support; however, with more modern and capable formats such as MP4, AVI is now considered a legacy format, with support for it on the decline.
The format allows the storage of both audio and video tracks using a variety of different codes. This allowance for different codes means that some AVI files would not play on devices that did not have the correct codec software installed.
Despite AVI files being superseded by more efficient formats that offer improved codecs and other features, many video editing and playback software can open and play AVI files.

A VID file is a video file format native to the ZX Spectrum Next. It stores uncompressed video as a sequence of images along with 8-bit audio. The only currently supported resolution of the video is 320x240 in 256 colors at around 16.6 FPS. For additional technical information, please see the Spectrum Next developer portal.
The VID format supports additional resolutions and framerates, which may or may not include a separate palette per frame. The conversion currently supported is for 320x256 resolution only, with a palette per frame.
The ZX Spectrum Next supports a maximum pixel color depth of 3bps (bits per pixel). Where a palette is included, this is a 256 color palette from a pool of 512 colors.
This conversion tool is only suited for short video files. Due to the large files generated by this tool, video files longer than 5 minutes may get truncated. If you wish to create longer videos at different resolutions and frame rates, please use the dedicated Spectrum Next VID tool that can be downloaded and run on Windows-based machines.
Our AVI and VID will attempt to convert these video format files with little or no loss in quality. You can upload video files up to 100MB in size; however, with large AVI files, please allow time for converting to a VID.
