Developed in the mid-1990s, WRL files are utilized to describe the geometry, appearance, and interactions of objects within a virtual environment. These files contain a structured set of nodes that define various components, such as shapes, materials, transformations, and viewpoints, which collectively create a coherent 3D scene. WRL files were popular for web-based virtual reality experiences in the early days of the internet and played a crucial role in the development of interactive 3D content for online applications.
Each node in a WRL file represents a specific element of the 3D scene and includes attributes that define its characteristics. For instance, nodes can specify the shape of an object (e.g., cubes, spheres, or complex meshes), its position and orientation in the virtual space, its visual appearance through materials and textures, and even its behavior through animations or interactive features.
