An IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) file is a standardized digital format used in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry for exchanging and sharing information among various software applications. Developed by the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI), now known as buildingSMART International, IFC is an open and neutral data format that facilitates the interoperability of different Building Information Modeling (BIM) software tools.

IFC files contain detailed information about building elements, spatial relationships, and other relevant data, allowing professionals across the AEC spectrum to collaborate seamlessly. These files serve as a common language for BIM applications, ensuring that data can be accurately and efficiently exchanged between different platforms. The use of IFC promotes collaboration, reduces errors, and enhances communication throughout the entire life cycle of a construction project, from design and planning to construction and maintenance.

One key feature of IFC is its ability to represent both geometric and non-geometric data, providing a comprehensive and standardized way to describe the physical and functional characteristics of a building or infrastructure project. This versatility makes IFC a vital component in the move towards more integrated and collaborative workflows within the AEC industry, fostering efficiency, accuracy, and improved decision-making processes.

The OBJ file format is a 3D graphics file format used to define complex 3D models, including geometry, materials, and textures. OBJ files are text files, making them human-readable and easy to modify by hand. The downside to this ease of readability is that the files can become rather large when dealing with large or complex 3D models.

As mentioned, the OBJ format stores not only 3D model geometry but also materials and textures. These materials are usually defined in a separate file with the MTL file extension and specify geometry rendering details such as diffuse and specular color, transparency, and much more.

The OBJ material file can also reference external texture files. These are usually JPEG or PNG files; however, these can be older formats, such as TGA. Where materials are used, the OBJ file will also contain material names preceding the geometry faces they should be applied to. If textures are referenced, the geometry will also contain texture coordinates (UV) for each vertex.

Information for converting from IFC to OBJ

Your IFC file will be converted to a OBJ file using our unified 3D model and mesh conversion tool. Our IFC 3D tool performs accurate conversions of 3D elements such as vertices, faces, normals and relevant material information. As IFC supports color materials and OBJ does not, our tool will not attempt to transfer any color information, your final 3D model will contain geometry data only.
