Here are 2 simple steps to convert your BMP to STL using our fast and free BMP converter tool.
Extension | BMP |

The BMP file format is a two dimensional image file format popular on Microsoft Windows operating systems. Data is stored in the BMP file in a raster format with pixels being represented using various colour depths ranging from monocrome 1-bit per pixel (bpp) to full color 24-bits per pixel.
The format can also contain an image alpha channel which is typically 8 bits per pixel in size and is used to describe image transparency. BMP files can also optionally be compressed using a lossless compression algorithm meaning smaller files with no loss of image quality.
Extension | STL |
Full Name | Standard Triangle Language |
Type | 3D Model |
Mime Type | application/vnd.ms-pki.stl |
Format | Text |
Opens With | Blender, MeshLab, CAD Assistant, DAZ Studio |
The STL file format has its roots in the 1980's and is the native file format for 3D Systems stereolithography CAD software. The format defines a triangulated mesh with vertices and faces and is a popular format for sharing 3D printable model files.
There were several formats that attempted to extend the STL format namely SolidView and VisCAM whose formats included limited 15-bit color information for each mesh face which is often ignored by most modern 3D software. The STL format can be either Text or Binary, our tools will support both formats.
Our BMP converter will convert your BMP file to a 3D model using the Heightmap process whereby 2D pixels, based on their luminosity, are converted into 3D space to create a full 3D STL model ready for download for further processing in your favourite 3D editing package or for printing on a 3D printer.
First click the "Upload..." button, select your BMP file to upload. Your BMP file will be uploaded to our servers. When the BMP to STL conversion has completed, you can download your STL file straight away.
We aim to process all BMP to STL conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds however this can be longer for certain files, so please be patient.
We aim to provide the best conversion experience. Our tools are under constant review and development with new features being added every week.
Our tool uses a Heightmap process whereby the STL 3D model is created based on the luminosity of the individual pixels in you BMP image.
Yes, to ensure our tool converts the BMP image quickly and with a reasonable final file size, your tool will resize any image larger than 600x600 pixels.
