The STEP file format is a 3D format defined in 1994 and used to store 3D objects for use in Computer-aided design (CAD) applications. STEP files are text-based formatted files containing one instance per line.
Although STEP files are widely supported by most CAD applications the format does have its limitations, such as the necessity to read the complete file into memory in order to parse the contents and due to the text storage of information the files can be quite large.
STEP Converter Capabilities
Our STEP 3D Model/Mesh tool does not support any color material data contained within STEP files so the converted file will not contain any color information.
Extension | STL |
Full Name | Standard Triangle Language |
Type | 3D Model |
Mime Type | application/vnd.ms-pki.stl |
Format | Text |
Opens With | Blender, MeshLab, CAD Assistant, DAZ Studio |
The STL file format has its roots in the 1980's and is the native file format for 3D Systems stereolithography CAD software. The format defines a triangulated mesh with vertices and faces and is a popular format for sharing 3D printable model files.
There were several formats that attempted to extend the STL format namely SolidView and VisCAM whose formats included limited 15-bit color information for each mesh face which is often ignored by most modern 3D software. The STL format can be either Text or Binary, our tools will support both formats.
STL Converter Capabilities
Our 3D conversion tool does not support color/material information in STL files so your file will not contain any color information.
Your STEP file will be converted to a STL file using our unified 3D model and mesh conversion tool. Our STEP 3D tool performs accurate conversions of 3D elements such as vertices, faces, normals and relevant material information. Our tool will not attempt to transfer any color information if present in your STEP file, your final 3D model will contain geometry data only.
First click the "Upload..." button, select your STEP file to upload. Your STEP file will be uploaded to our servers. When the STEP to STL conversion has completed, you can download your STL file straight away.
We aim to process all STEP to STL conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds however this can be longer for certain files, so please be patient.
We aim to provide the best conversion experience. Our tools are under constant review and development with new features being added every week.
