The STL file format has its roots in the 1980's and is the native file format for 3D Systems stereolithography CAD software. The format defines a triangulated mesh with vertices and faces and is a popular format for sharing 3D printable model files.
There were several formats that attempted to extend the STL format namely SolidView and VisCAM whose formats included limited 15-bit color information for each mesh face which is often ignored by most modern 3D software. The STL format can be either Text or Binary, our tools will support both formats.

When converting 3D Model/Mesh files using our [ey] converter we will attempt to convert color materials into a suitable format for use in the converted file.

GIF files have been around since the mid-to-late 1980's and were introduced by CompuServe as a way to compress color images into small file sizes suitable for downloading which at the time most download speeds were limited. The format allows varying size color palettes upto 256-colors in total to be defined from a palette of 16 million colors.
Later on the ability to add animations to the GIF file format was added. GIF files became a popular image file format for the early internet due to the small size, large color palette and animation capabilities and is still popular today.
The STL 3D format does not support animations within our conversion tool so our tool will create a simple 360 degree rotating 3D animation that will be rendered to a GIF file ready for download.
First click the "Upload..." button, select your STL file to upload. Your STL file will be uploaded to our servers. When the STL to GIF (Animated) conversion has completed, you can download your GIF (Animated) file straight away.
We aim to process all STL to GIF (Animated) conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds however this can be longer for certain files, so please be patient.
We aim to provide the best conversion experience. Our tools are under constant review and development with new features being added every week.
If your STL file contains an animation then our tool will create a GIF (Animated) file containing the full length animation. If there is no animation present our tool will use a simple rotation animation.
