The WRL file format is a 3D based model format originally created in the 1990's which was aimed at website usage. The format is text based and contains 3D geometry data such as vertices, faces, simple shapes and material information and more.
This format when launched was hoped to become a standard 3D format, however due to the large file sizes it didn't see wide spread adoption although it is a supported format within some CAD software applications. It was later superseded by the X3D file format which shares most of the functionality of WRL files.
WRL Converter Capabilities
When converting 3D Model/Mesh files using our [ey] converter we will attempt to convert color materials into a suitable format for use in the converted file.
Extension | OBJ |
Full Name | Wavefront |
Type | 3D Model |
Mime Type | text/plain |
Format | Text |
Opens With | MeshLab, CAD Assistant, DAZ Studio |
The OBJ file format originally created by Wavefront Technologies and later adopted by many other 3D software vendors is a simple text-based file format for describing 3D model/geometry. This data can include Vertices, Faces, Normals, Texture Coordinates and references to external Texture files.
As the format is text-based it is relatively straight-forward to parse by 3D modelling applications. A downside of the text-based format is the files can be rather large compared to similar binary formats such as STL and compressed files such as 3MF.
Your WRL file will be converted to a OBJ file using our unified 3D model and mesh conversion tool. Our WRL 3D tool performs accurate conversions of 3D elements such as vertices, faces, normals and relevant material information. As WRL supports color materials and OBJ does not, our tool will not attempt to transfer any color information, your final 3D model will contain geometry data only.
First click the "Upload..." button, select your WRL file to upload. Your WRL file will be uploaded to our servers. When the WRL to OBJ conversion has completed, you can download your OBJ file straight away.
We aim to process all WRL to OBJ conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds however this can be longer for certain files, so please be patient.
We aim to provide the best conversion experience. Our tools are under constant review and development with new features being added every week.
