A DPX file is an image file format whose main users are those in the TV and movie industries. The DPX format can store video frames or single static images as uncompressed image data, ensuring no loss in quality.

As the data within a DPX file is stored uncompressed, this leads to a very large file size and limits its appeal to other uses. A video animation sequence can be achieved by storing each frame as a separate DPX file. As well as storing image data, a DPX file will also contain other important metadata, such as timing and colour information.

Despite its capabilities, the DPX format has been replaced by more modern video and image formats, such as PNG and JPEG for images and EXR for video. DPX files can still be used with some modern image editing applications.
