YUV files are a type of image file where the image data consists of a stream of raw pixel data with no header information. This lack of header information, which usually contains the image dimensions among other properties, means the image size must be input prior to loading a YUV image in order for it to be displayed correctly.
Within an YUV file, image data is stored as a sequence of uncompressed Y, U, and V values used to represent each pixel. The Y component represents the grayscale, with the U and V values representing the colour information. Each colour channel is 8 bits in size, creating a total of 24 bits across the YUV colour range.
YUV files are a legacy file format that can be opened with certain image editing applications that still support this format; alternatively, we have a set of YUV image conversion tools designed to convert YUV files to other, more modern formats, such as PNG.
