A 3DS file, also known as a 3D Studio file, is a digital file format used for storing three-dimensional models and scenes. It was originally developed by Autodesk for their 3D Studio software and later adopted by other 3D modeling applications. The 3DS file format can store a wide range of information related to 3D models, including geometric data, textures, lighting, and animation data.
Geometric data within a 3DS file describes the shape and structure of the 3D model, such as vertices, edges, and faces that define the object's surface. Texture information allows the application to apply images or materials to the model's surface, giving it a realistic appearance. Additionally, 3DS files can store lighting data, enabling the 3D scene to have various light sources and shadows.
One of the significant advantages of the 3DS file format is its compatibility with many 3D modeling software packages, making it a widely used and supported format in the computer graphics industry. However, as technology has advanced, newer and more efficient file formats have emerged, such as FBX and OBJ, which offer better support for modern features and larger scenes.
3DS Converter Capabilities
Currently our 3DS converter can only convert from 3DS files, our developers are working to allow converting to 3DS files in future versions of our tools. Our 3DS 3D Model/Mesh tool does not support any color material data contained within 3DS files so the converted file will not contain any color information.
Our 3DS conversion tool can convert most 3D geometry including mesh vertices and faces with no loss of detail. Any color materials contained within the 3D model file will be converted where possible.
No, due to the different methods of assigning textures to a 3D model textures are not currently supported. If your 3DS model contains textures or references to external texture files, these will be ignored.
Yes! Our 3DS conversion tools are 100% free to use.
No, you can convert as many files as you wish. We do not impose any conversion limits on our 3DS conversion tools.
We aim to process all 3DS conversions as quickly as possible, this usually takes around 5 seconds however this can be longer for certain files and significantly longer for some larger file formats, so please be patient.
Once your 3DS file has been uploaded and we know the file format you wish to convert it to our bespoke conversion software will convert your 3DS and make it available for you to download with a unique download Url.
Yes, of course it is! Your 3DS, once converted is deleted 1 hour after upload and the download link will expire after this time.
Yes! Our 3DS conversion tools will run on any system with a modern web browser.
