How accurate is the X-Plane to OBJ conversion?

We aim to provide the best conversion experience. Our tools are under constant review and development, with new features being added every week.

How does converting X-Plane OBJ to OBJ work?

In order to successfully convert an X-Plane OBJ formatted file to the OBJ format, our converter tools will perform several initial checks to ensure the file provided is indeed an X-Plane OBJ file. There are many files out there where the file type extension does not match the data contained within the file. Along with these file type checks, our tools will do additional checks to ensure the file is correctly formatted to match the provided file type. There are many tools out there that do not always create X-Plane OBJ files to the exact specification.

Take your X-Plane OBJ file

The X-Plane OBJ file format is a text-based format, meaning its contents are human-readable, making X-Plane OBJ files easy to edit in simple text editors. Within this text-based format are the core elements that make up the 3D model, including vertices, faces, and more. To ensure efficient conversions, our tool will check all data that is contained within the X-Plane OBJ file and remove any information that is duplicated. This not only ensures the conversion completes more quickly, but also the generated OBJ file size is smaller.

Along with the core data that makes up the 3D model, our tool will check the X-Plane OBJ file for the presence of texture coordinates to ensure any texture-based materials are converted correctly. Even if the texture files are not presented with the X-Plane OBJ file, our converter will preserve any texture coordinates when converting to the OBJ format.

Convert the data from X-Plane OBJ to OBJ

Now that the data from the X-Plane OBJ file has been processed, our tool can apply any conversion specified options, such as enabling Voxel mode, and with these applied, prepare the data to be converted to the final OBJ file format. Part of this process ensures checking the capabilities of the OBJ format and removing any data that cannot be represented.

Save to the OBJ format

At this point, the X-Plane OBJ to OBJ conversion tool will have the 3D model in a state that is ready to be transferred to the OBJ format. Our tool creates the OBJ file, ensuring all the model data is present and is formatted to match the OBJ file specification to ensure the file opens in compatible OBJ file editors.

If the X-Plane OBJ file contains texture images, these will be exported to a format that is compatible with the OBJ format. For most textures that are stored as JPG or PNG images, these are transferred with no changes. However, if there are other formats, such as TGA, these will be converted to a suitable format.

If an X-Plane OBJ texture does need to be converted to a different image file format, our tool will ensure the quality and resolution are not degraded during the conversion process.

Not to be confused with the Wavefront OBJ format, the OBJ8 format is a separate format used in conjunction with the X-Plane 3D simulator software as a means of transferring data between X-Plane and other 3D modelling applications and tools.

The OBJ8 format, as it is known, uses the OBJ file extension and stores 3D model data represented by a list of vertices, triangles, and lines. Other data is included in the format, such as lighting, texture information, and other related data.

OBJ8 files are text-based, with each vertex stored on a single line within the file. The vertex includes its X, Y, and Z position, normal, and texture coordinates. Following the vertices is a list of face indices, which, in the case of a 3D model, represent the triangles that make up the model.

Our X-Plane 3D Model/Mesh tool does not support any colour material data contained within OBJ files, so the converted file will not contain any colour information.

The OBJ file format is a 3D graphics file format used to define complex 3D models, including geometry, materials, and textures. OBJ files are text files, making them human-readable and easy to modify by hand. The downside to this ease of readability is that the files can become rather large when dealing with large or complex 3D models.

As mentioned, the OBJ format stores not only 3D model geometry but also materials and textures. These materials are usually defined in a separate file with the MTL file extension and specify geometry rendering details such as diffuse and specular colour, transparency, and much more.

The OBJ material file can also reference external texture files. These are usually JPEG or PNG files; however, these can be older formats, such as TGA. Where materials are used, the OBJ file will also contain material names preceding the geometry faces they should be applied to. If textures are referenced, the geometry will also contain texture coordinates (UV) for each vertex.

OBJ Converter Capabilities

Our 3D conversion tool does not support colour or material information in OBJ files, so your file will not contain any colour information.

Information for converting from X-Plane to OBJ

Your X-Plane file will be converted to a OBJ file using our unified 3D model and mesh conversion tool. Our X-Plane 3D tool performs accurate conversions of 3D elements such as vertices, faces, normals, and relevant material information. Our tool will not attempt to transfer any colour information if it is present in your OBJ file; your final 3D model will contain only geometry data.
